But only half that money came from the casinos' core business: money won on their physical premises. Collectively, the casinos surpassed 2019 levels with $2.8 billion won from in-person gamblers, but that was accomplished largely on the strength of the three newest casinos. Hard Rock won $512 million, up 4.1%, and Ocean won nearly $415 million, up 16.3%. Harrah's won $254 million in person, down 1.5%; Tropicana won $240 million, down 3.3%; Caesars won $231 million, down 1.7%; Resorts won $163 million, down 2.3%; Bally's won $155 million, up less than 1%, and Golden Nugget won $146 million, down 1.8%. Among internet-only entities, Resorts Digital won $822 million, up 50.4%, and Caesars Interactive Entertainment NJ won $90 million, down 20.7%.

The most fun entry on the BET+ slate is Terri J. Vaughn’s comedy about friendship. When Wyvetta (Tichina Arnold, from “The Neighborhood”) is dumped at the altar on Christmas Eve, she and her supportive bestie Dione (Tami Roman) publicly swear off romance on their podcast. Um, did these two women really intend to remain chaste for the rest of their lives? Filmed largely in Atlantic City, this breezy movie benefits from Arnold and Roman’s believable camaraderie. And we could have used a lot more of Michael Colyar and Jackée Harry as Wyvetta’s forbearing parents.

Political Cartoons View All 1274 ImagesNew Jersey's law banning smoking in public businesses specifically exempts Atlantic City's casinos. “I feel extremely confident that people will lose their jobs” under a total smoking ban. Support for a casino smoking ban is widespread among New Jersey lawmakers, with a bipartisan majority in both chambers, and Democratic Gov. Shreveport, Louisiana ended a smoking ban in its casinos in June. The casino industry opposes a smoking ban, saying it would lose customers and revenue if smoking were banned while still being allowed in casinos in nearby states.

BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt knows Fanatics and ESPN Bet are looking to eat his lunch. However, it has lost some ground, hovering around 15% market share in the third quarter compared to about 20% a year earlier. And a new crop of competitors including Fanatics and Penn Entertainment's ESPN Bet are vying for its position. "Everyone's kind of fighting for that third and fourth spot," Macquarie gambling analyst Chad Beynon told Business Insider in September. Online casino gaming, also known as igaming, is legal in only a handful of US states and has expanded slower than legal sports betting.

Currently, only six states offer internet casino gambling: New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Michigan and West Virginia. (Nevada offers internet poker but not online casino games; Rhode Island has passed an online casino bill, but it is not expected to go into effect until March 2024.) One of those states may be Indiana, where an online casino bill died in February due in large part to fears that it would hurt the state’s existing physical casinos. Jane Bokunewicz, director of the Lloyd Levenson Institute at Stockton University, which studies the Atlantic City gambling industry, noted that in most internet gambling states, brick-and-mortar gambling revenue has grown alongside that of internet betting, although at a slower pace. “Casino revenue after the pandemic has stabilized, and online revenue is setting new records."

Hard Rock posted a gross operating profit of $44.3 million in the third quarter, up less than 1% from a year earlier. Gross operating profit reflects earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and other expenses, and is a widely accepted measure of profitability in the Atlantic City casino industry. “In keeping with the experiences of many resort communities along the New Jersey shore, Atlantic City saw a bit of a cooling off in summer 2023 compared to the pent-up post-pandemic energy seen in 2021 and 2022, said Jane Bokunewicz, director of the Lloyd Levenson Institute at Stockton University, which studies the Atlantic City casino industry. ”That said, it did outperform pre-pandemic 2019 for both net revenue and gross operating profit, suggesting that this could be part of a cycle of stabilization." The Tropicana had a profit of $36.7 million, down 11.5%; Harrah's had a $30 million profit, down over 13%; Caesars had a $21.1 million profit, down nearly 18%; Golden Nugget had an $11 million profit, nearly 4%; Bally's had a $7.3 million profit, down over 32%; and Resorts had a $7.2 million profit, down nearly 43%.

By now, you probably know a lot about George Santos, the congressman who scammed with abandon and made up almost everything. But the fact that he remains in Congress highlights something crucial about the people’s House. Even in that company, Mr. Santos stands out by exposing just how much craziness the Republican Party is willing to tolerate in pursuit of narrow partisan gains. The biographical lies and widely reported small-time hustles that boosted Mr. Santos pale in comparison with his penchant for “just throwing ideas.”I’m borrowing that phrase directly from Mr. Santos, who said it in a Spaces conversation on X, formerly Twitter, in October, shortly after Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel. “I don’t care if we go into a police state for a couple of months.”

Santos easily survived an expulsion vote earlier this month as lawmakers in both parties stressed the need to allow due process, as Santos is also facing nearly two dozen charges in federal court. The Ethics Committee referred its findings to the Justice Department, serving up new evidence that could potentially play into the federal charges against Santos. Several other members of the Ethics panel have also come out in favor of expulsion now that the investigation is complete. The Ethics panel appointed to investigate Santos met nine times over the course of its investigation, interviewed more than 40 witnesses and authorized 37 subpoenas. The panel also described Santos as uncooperative with their investigation, declining to voluntarily testify or provide a statement under oath.

But the report also indicates that there was some tension between the overlapping DOJ criminal probe and House ethics probe. ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., (AP) — A fire broke out under the wooden Atlantic City Boardwalk on Wednesday right in front of the entrance to Resorts casino, melting part of its facade and burning the doors. But no one was injured and the facility was able to remain open, authorities said. Two restaurants near the fire were temporarily closed and hoped to reopen later Wednesday, Fire Chief Scott Evans and Resorts President Mark Giannantonio said. Black smoke boiled into the air as orange flames leapt beneath the Resorts sign. The casino was accessible through a secondary Boardwalk entrance as well as side entrances near parking areas, Giannantonio said.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Five Atlantic City casinos and a horse racing track are forfeiting over $77,000 worth of money won by underage gamblers or those who had placed themselves on a list to be excluded from gambling activities. The forfeited money will go to the state to be used for programs to treat compulsive gambling, as well as on programs benefiting senior citizens and those with disabilities. The Ocean Casino Resort forfeited over $7,500; Bally's forfeited over $5,600; Freehold Raceway forfeited over $4,400; the Golden Nugget forfeited over $4,200; and Harrah's forfeited nearly $900. Collectively, they have won more than $4.2 billion from gamblers through the first nine months of this year. But they do indicate ongoing enforcement of regulations by which all casinos and gambling operations must operate.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump has testified in court as a football owner, casino builder and airline buyer. Trump has testified in court in at least eight trials since 1986, according to an Associated Press review of court records and news coverage. Trump testified that his $365 million purchase, later approved, would be a “major boost in morale” for employees. ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Wind energy developer Orsted is writing off $4 billion, due largely to the cancellation of two large offshore wind projects in New Jersey whose financial challenges mirror those facing the nascent industry. Some projects already have been canceled, and many offshore wind developers are seeking better terms from governments with whom they have already contracted. Despite the challenges, some wind projects are moving forward. Orsted said it is proceeding with its Revolution Wind project in Connecticut and Rhode Island. The state hasn't wavered as a conservative stronghold in the modern era, and its last Democratic governor was denied a second term 20 years ago. A former mayor of tiny Nettleton, Presley is wrapping up his fourth term as a state utility regulator for northern Mississippi. One of the most famous Black Mississippi residents, Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman, recently joined him at a campaign event. Presley has raised more campaign cash than Reeves this year, and he's attracting larger and more diverse crowds than any Democrat running for Mississippi governor in a generation. Presley says the new method of electing a governor gives him a better chance than the old one.
